Step 1 – Plan
This may
be one of the biggest projects that you undertake
in your home. It is important that you think
about the following questions to help get your
project underway;
Why do you want to renovate? Are you
looking for more space? tired with your existing
floor plan? Do you want modern fixtures and
accessories? Do you just want a bathroom face
lift? Does your bathroom leak or is it just
falling apart?
Who uses the bathroom? (Males, females,
kids, adults, teens, elderly, infants etc)
this information is useful when listing your
requirements eg: storage, themes & accessories
Do they have special requirements? Consider
the needs of others that will use the room.
eg: having a shower over a bath tub may save
space in a small room but how does an elderly
relative or family member get in and out? Do
your wife and or teenage daughter need extra
storage room for make-up and other personal
items?
Is this your only bathroom facility? If
so, should you go on holidays while the renovation
is taking place? What alternative arrangements
can we make? Do you need to hire a port-a-loo
or portable bathroom? A quality renovation
takes 3-4 weeks to complete on average and
the toilet is the first thing removed and the
last thing installed.
What is your financial picture? Do
you have savings set aside for the work? Do
you need a bank loan? How much can you afford
to spend? What does a new bathroom cost anyway?
Bathrooms are the most expensive rooms in your
home to renovate. Apart from the kitchen, it
is the only room that has permanent fixtures
and fittings and requires five different
licensed and specialist trades to put
it together. 1. Plumber, 2. Electrician, 3.
Carpenter, 4. Waterproofer,
and 5. Wall & Floor Tiler. A
reputable renovator will not want to cut corners
to save money, nor want to give you only half
a job because that’s all you can afford.
After all, he has to put his name to (Guarantee)
the work for seven years. A realistic budget
is required to achieve the best results.
Step 2 - Gather Information
- Visit some retail showrooms to get a feeling
for overall concepts to establish colour
themes and styles. At this stage, it is not
necessary to focus on individual items until
your builder has given you the relevant sizes
and specifications
- Collect pictures from bathroom magazines,
notes and articles on styles and projects
that interest you and your tastes
- Compile a “wish list” with
all the things that you would like to have
in the bathroom
Step 3 - Prepare Yourself
For A Design Consultation
If you answered yes to most of the above questions...
you are now ready for step 4.
